Problem: Our client was laboring under an in-house matter management system, built on an outdated platform. They felt system reporting was unreliable, which prevented the staff from analyzing and controlling costs and other matter related details.
What We Did: We reviewed the existing system and concurred with another firm’s assessment that a full system replacement was required.
To help the company select and implement a product that would fit their needs, we provided consultants to lead their in-house selection committee. Product research and demos from selected vendors followed. We supplied the company with scorecards based on identified ‘must-haves’ and ‘wish lists’ they provided. The final product was selected based on these results.
A complete Kiersted project team took charge of managing and working on all implementation tasks including hardware acquisition, system design, data conversion, rule writing, SAP interface designs, report universe design and report writing.

We met with representatives from every division within the large legal department to insure the design would meet their divergent needs. Additionally, we integrated data and design requirements from two other legal departments at companies acquired during this period.
A large portion of the design included reviewing and streamlining the legal department’s financial processes and client reporting needs. We researched each field in the old systems and added, combined, or deleted any fields causing report errors.
Results: The new system fully integrated the data from all three pre-existing systems into a single new system, automated processes, and enforced corporate requirements. This solid foundation of accurate data made possible timely and accurate management reporting.
Electronic workflow replaced paper, giving the client total awareness of expenditures, expediting invoicing, and enabling cross-departmental tracking. Paper invoices were totally eliminated.
For faster, more flexible reporting, the new report writer allows the client to generate reports and reduce reliance on systems staff. Attorneys at all levels are able to search the application for accurate, real-time information with minimal training involved. Additionally, we implemented a thin client application allowing secure remote access from any computer with Internet access.
